AI Prompts for Scientific Research and Literature Review Synthesis
Literature reviews take weeks. I've built prompts that synthesize 20+ papers into coherent summaries: consensus, disagreements, research gaps. Results: literature review compiled in 4 hours instead of 40. Researcher then follows up with critical reading. I'm documenting the research synthesis framework.
Multi Paper Synthesis and Consensus Finding
Prompt 1: 'Summarize these research papers: [PASTE ABSTRACTS / LINKS]. For each: main finding, methodology, key evidence, limitations.' Output: structured summary of each paper. Prompt 2: 'Synthesize these summaries: [SUMMARIES]. What's the consensus finding? What's debated? What's unknown/under-researched? Create a literature review outline with sections: (1) Consensus findings, (2) Competing hypotheses, (3) Methodological debates, (4) Research gaps.' Output: structured review. Researcher reads summaries, disagrees with AI synthesis on key points, edits. Final review combines AI structure with expert judgment. Time: 4 hours cumulative (AI + review) vs. 40 hours manual. Accuracy: non-expert can understand 80% of field after reading AI synthesis. I used this on 50-paper neuroscience literature review; insights were solid enough for expert to iterate on, not start from scratch.
AI struggles with nuance in scientific disagreements. It sees papers A and B say different things and marks it as 'debate.' Expert then clarifies: paper A used methodology X, paper B used methodology Y, results are actually consistent within their methodologies. AI synthesis is the skeleton; expert judgment is the critical refinement.
