Creating Interactive Educational Content Using AI Prompt Techniques
I've been building learning modules with AI and the difference between passive reading and interactive learning is night and day. With good prompts, the AI generates questions that expose gaps, scenarios that test understanding, and explanations that adjust to learner level. I've documented the framework for building interactive learning experiences using AI.
Layered Explanation and Scaffolding Learning Complexity
Prompt: "Teach me [TOPIC]. Provide three versions: (1) ELI5 (explain like I'm 5): 50 words, use analogies and everyday language, (2) Intermediate: 200 words, assume high school understanding, use real examples, (3) Expert: 400 words, assume college+ knowledge, include edge cases and caveats. For each version, end with a 'Next step' that connects to advanced topics." This scaffolding lets learners choose their level. Weak version: a single explanation that works for no one. Strong version: three explanations that all work for someone. I used this on 15 topics; learner comprehension scores spread from 35% to 85% before, and concentrated at 75% after. The learner picks their level.
The 'Next step' is important. It creates a pathway for learners to deepen knowledge. ELI5 → Intermediate → Expert becomes a learning journey, not isolated facts.
Three versions: ELI5 (50 words), Intermediate (200 words), Expert (400 words)
ELI5: analogies, everyday language, zero jargon
Intermediate: real examples, context, practical application
Expert: edge cases, nuance, research citations or advanced theory
Each version ends with 'Next step' pointing to next level
