Defining Success Metrics for Various Prompt Types
Different prompt types need different metrics. Marketing prompts: open rate, click rate, conversion. Support prompts: resolution time, customer satisfaction, escalation rate. Technical prompts: code correctness, security audit pass, performance benchmark. Analysis prompts: decision-maker agreement, insight usefulness, time-to-insight. For each prompt, define one primary metric. Example: subject line prompt, primary metric = open rate. Baseline subject lines: 25% open rate. New prompt: 28% open rate. That's 12% improvement. Test on larger sample: 1000 emails. 28% improvement is +30 opens. Value per email opened: depends on your business. You can now calculate ROI: prompt improvement worth $X. The framework makes improvement quantifiable. Without it, you have no feedback loop.
Primary metric chosen strategically. If you optimize for open rate but ignore click rate, you get emails that open but don't convert. Choose holistically if possible: open rate + click rate combined score.
