I've been building chain-based workflows: each step is a distinct prompt, and each output becomes the next input. Results: quality improves 70%, time to completion drops surprisingly. Designing Prompt Chains and Output Handoffs
Prompt 1: 'Design a [SYSTEM]. Requirements: [LIST]. Deliverable: architecture diagram in ASCII art + written specification.' Output: specification file. Prompt 2: 'Implement this specification: [SPEC]. Language: [LANG]. Deliverable: complete, runnable code with error handling.' Output: code file. Prompt 3: 'Test this code: [CODE]. Write 10 test cases covering: normal cases, edge cases, error cases. Format: [LANGUAGE_TEST_SYNTAX]. Deliverable: test suite.' Output: test file. Each prompt takes the previous output as input. The AI stays in context and builds on prior work. I tested single-prompt (all-in-one) vs. chained (5 prompts) on 10 projects. Single-prompt: average 4 bugs per project, 30% features incomplete. Chained: average 0.8 bugs, 95% feature completion.
Handoff quality matters. When you give Prompt 2 the code, include the original specification, so the AI can verify it's implementing correctly. Context is your friend.
